Marigolds are a central part of Día de los Muertos altars, according to an Associated Press feature. The flowers are believed to guide spirits home.
In Mexico City, vendors and porters carried bundles of cempasúchil, or marigold flowers, at the Mercado de Jamaica on Oct. 24, where the blooms are sold for Day of the Dead offerings. The New York Botanical Garden also showed marigold-adorned displays, including a La Catrina sculpture, during its Día de los Muertos celebration in the Bronx on Sept. 29.
