Vehicle emissions testing in Bexar County began Sunday. The county projects the rule will affect nearly 2 million vehicles.
Gasoline-powered vehicles between two and 24 model years old must pass an annual emissions test as part of vehicle registration. The test costs $18.50. Bexar County Tax Assessor-Collector Albert Uresti said the county does not keep any of that money. It goes to the person conducting the test and to the state.
According to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, drivers can renew their registration up to 90 days before it expires. The emissions test must be completed within that 90-day renewal period. After passing, drivers can renew online, by mail, or in person. Lists of official inspection locations and a station locator are available, along with a question-and-answer guide from the Texas Department of Public Safety.
