Democrat Nathan Johnson, the Texas attorney general-elect, said his goal is to rebuild the office Ken Paxton held for 12 years. Paxton lost his bid for the U.S. Senate, leaving the attorney general's office. Johnson will take over the post in January.

Johnson told the Texas Standard he was not surprised by his win. He said he had expected a strong challenge and was nervous before the election. He said voters were looking for "good government" and rejected what he described as meanness and divisiveness in politics. He also said some Republican voters had told him they would not vote for any Republican on their ballot.

Johnson said he believes the results could help both parties by rejecting a direction that had gone too far, in his view. The interview did not give details on his first priorities in the office.
