General Motors has reached a $220 million settlement with 35 states and the District of Columbia. The states said GM sold vehicle data to insurance companies without telling drivers, and that the data came from the company's Smart Driver and OnStar systems.

A 2024 New York Times investigation found that GM cars collected large amounts of data, as many automakers do, and sold that data to insurers, who used it to raise drivers' rates, according to the report. Tech expert Omar Gallaga said Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a similar lawsuit on his own.

Under the multistate settlement, GM promised not to collect driver data in this way for five years. The money will be paid to the states that filed the suit.
