El Paso will hold parades, public ceremonies and gatherings to honor veterans and their families, according to El Paso Inc. Veterans Day is observed Wednesday, Nov. 11, and recognizes everyone who has served in the U.S. military, in wartime or peacetime.

The holiday began as Armistice Day, marking the end of World War I. Congress made it a federal holiday in 1938. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the law renaming it Veterans Day in 1954.

Residents of El Paso County and surrounding communities can take part in several observances. Events include community celebrations and ceremonies at memorials and cemeteries.
