Texas Gov.-elect Gina Hinojosa is asking lawmakers to respect the results of Tuesday's election. She made the request at her first post-election news conference Thursday, when she was asked about Republican efforts to limit her authority before she takes office.
Republican state Rep. Brian Harrison of Midlothian has called for a special legislative session to reconsider the governor's emergency powers. In a social media post, he asked Gov. Abbott to call the session before Hinojosa is sworn in. He said Texas emergency powers laws would let the governor modify or ignore laws, or create and enforce criminal laws, and he said he believes those laws are almost certainly unconstitutional.
Harrison urged the Legislature to pass, and Abbott to sign, legislation like HB911, which Harrison said he filed in 2022.
