Cuero Gobblers junior Jarvis Williams, a transfer from Shiner, has become the team's starting quarterback. Head coach Jerod Fikac said before the season that Williams could play quarterback, wide receiver, running back or defense. Williams helped Shiner win 15 straight games last year and reach the UIL 2A Division II Championship Game.
Williams first started at quarterback on Oct. 9 at home against San Antonio Memorial, the Gobblers' district opener. Senior starter Jace Guajardo was out with an injury. Williams completed 11 of 12 passes for 226 yards and five touchdowns in a 58-12 win. Cuero later won 48-13 at Gonzales and 63-33 at home against Navarro. Against Navarro, Williams threw three touchdown passes and ran for four more.
In his three starts, Williams has completed 87 percent of his passes for 579 yards with 11 touchdowns and no interceptions. He has also run 21 times for 279 yards and five scores. Fikac said Williams is adjusting well to Cuero's dropback passing system. The Gobblers are ranked No. 4 and stand at 3-0 in district play.
