U.S. Attorney Ryan Raybould announced Operation Deep Cover on November 2. The effort will increase patrols and pursue federal drug and firearm cases in Deep Ellum after shootings over Halloween weekend left four people dead. According to the U.S. attorney's office, Dallas police, the Texas Department of Public Safety, the FBI, the ATF, the Drug Enforcement Administration and the U.S. Marshals Service are taking part. Neighborhood cases dating to 2024 will be reviewed for possible federal charges.

Raybould also announced a federal complaint charging Treyveion Dionte Demby with possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. Dallas police arrested Demby on November 1. The complaint does not charge him with any of the killings or say he fired the weapon. ATF task force officer Fernando Garcia said in an affidavit that an officer responding to gunfire near 1 a.m. saw Demby pointing a handgun toward the street in the 2600 block of Main Street. The law presumes Demby innocent unless prosecutors prove his guilt in court.

Three shootings occurred between about 12:20 a.m. and 1:35 a.m. on November 1 along Elm, Main and South Crowdus streets, Fox 4 KDFW reported. Police Chief Daniel Comeaux said about 15 people were injured, but the total is still changing because some victims went to hospitals on their own.
