Ben Collins, CEO of satirical newspaper The Onion, is campaigning for the company to sponsor a college football bowl game. He said the company is holding a sale to raise funds, and he estimated a bowl sponsorship on ESPN costs around $400,000.
On Bluesky, Collins said the game could be played in Texas. In an interview with sports journalist Pablo Torre, he mentioned the First Responder Bowl, which will be played January 2, 2027, at Gerald J. Ford Stadium in University Park. Other options he named included bowls in Boca Raton, Florida; Boise, Idaho; and Conway, South Carolina.
Collins said he approached ESPN two years ago about sponsoring the Frisco Bowl, but that ESPN stopped the move. He also said a 2024 deal to sponsor the New Orleans Bowl fell through after organizers objected to the "Sickos Guy" as the bowl's mascot. Collins said former ESPN personality Kenny Mayne would serve as the bowl's in-game host.
