Plano voters rejected Proposition A, which would have provided public financing for a proposed Dallas Stars arena. The city of Plano said it plans to reassess financial options and present them to City Council. The Stars said they are disappointed but remain committed to the project and look forward to continuing their partnership with Plano as the city pursues a project finance zone to be created by the Texas legislature.
Dallas City Council members Bazaldua and Blackmon said in a statement that Dallas is ready to negotiate to keep the team within city limits. Steven Haynes, an associate professor of finance and managerial economics at UT Dallas, said the Stars could explore private investors or scale back the development. He said the organization has "a couple of weeks" to decide or may be locked into a long-term lease at its existing location.
Karen Dubrow, chair of the Stop the Stars Arena PAC, said the group was outspent by more than $1 million. She said the opposition centered on who should be responsible for the cost of the arena, not on keeping the team out of Plano. Plano Mayor John Muns said the city is committed to responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars as it considers what comes next.
