The Hansford County Reporter-Statesman has named Sheryl Driscoll Meek of Spearman as its October Hometown Heartbeat, a monthly recognition of a community volunteer. Meek was born in Guymon, Oklahoma, and grew up at the Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Co. Hansford Compression Plant, where she attended a school for first through eighth grade. She graduated from Spearman High School in 1961 and played clarinet in the band, serving as drum major her senior year.
Meek married Bob Meek in 1962 at what is now Cornerstone Methodist Church in Spearman. The couple has two sons, Wayne and Greg Meek. The paper said Meek has played piano for the church for many years, which it calculated as 54 years at the church. She has also served on the Spearman School Board as a community representative for three years.
In 2018, the Texas State Board of Education honored Meek with its Heroes for Children award for her work with public schools, according to the story. Meek also worked with Kristi Ramone and Karen Thompson to start Read with a Buddy, a program that lets first and second graders spend 30 minutes reading with a partner.
