The Zapata County Sheriff's Office announced Tuesday that a 16-year-old girl stabbed in Zapata County had died. Her mother and aunt identified her as Abigail Lizette Flores, who lived in Laredo. The sheriff's office said Flores was stabbed about 8:18 p.m. Oct. 25 in the 2400 block of Carla Street in Zapata. She was taken to a hospital and died Monday.
Flores's mother and aunt said she had traveled to Zapata before the stabbing. They also said 20-year-old Francisco Javier Torres Jr., who was taken into custody after the stabbing, was her boyfriend. The sheriff's office said the charge against Torres has been upgraded to murder. Texas Department of Public Safety Texas Rangers are assisting with the investigation. Authorities have not released a motive or details about what led to the stabbing.
A GoFundMe campaign set up by the family is raising money for funeral expenses. According to Flores's obituary, visitation and funeral services are scheduled for Nov. 2 and 3 in Laredo, with burial set for Nov. 3 at Laredo City Cemetery.
