Democrats Gina Hinojosa and Vikki Goodwin won Tuesday's election for governor and lieutenant governor, according to the report. Hinojosa would be the state's first Latina governor, and Goodwin would be its first female lieutenant governor. Democrats also won enough House seats to secure the right to name the speaker.

On Friday, state Rep. Senfronia Thompson, D-Houston, said she had the votes to become House speaker. Members are expected to vote on the first day of the legislative session in January. The Legislature would then have its first Democratic majority since 2003.

If Thompson's coalition holds, Texas would have its first all-female "Big Three" of governor, lieutenant governor and House speaker. Two women, Miriam "Ma" Ferguson and Ann Richards, have served as governor, but no woman has held the other two jobs.

State Rep. Christina Morales, a Houston Democrat, said it was "well past time" for women to lead in Texas. She said the women's records show they are qualified.
