A 17-year-old student faces a charge of unlawful carrying of a weapon in a prohibited place, a third-degree felony, police said. According to a letter from Principal Paula Kent, described by WFAA, the Evolv screening system alerted staff after the recently enrolled student entered through a designated entrance on November 4. Staff found a firearm and detained the student with school resource officers. District officials said the student will not return to McKinney ISD. Officials did not describe the firearm or say whether there was a plan to attack.
The arrest follows several incidents involving students and firearms at area schools this year, according to the reports. On October 29, two Garland High School students were arrested after an image circulated of a student holding what police described as a firearm on campus. At Denton Guyer High School, a firearm was found in a backpack, and police arrested two students in the October 2 incident.
