The Mexia Garden Club congratulated Brenda Canizales of E. Rusk St. on being named September Yard of the Month. She shared the award with her sons, Abisai and Eliel Canizales.
The club said Canizales has added to her front garden over the years. Its main feature is a bed of neon-green potato vines that runs along the concrete walkway and frames both corners of the home. An evergreen tree stands between two front windows, and darker green shrubs and flowering perennials fill the space behind the vines.
A short brick wall encloses a second bed with rounded boxwoods, deep green shrubs and white petunias. A large white planter on the front steps holds a potted palm tree, and clipped hedges line the front entryway. Decor, plants and hay near the front door add to the yard's Texas look, the club said.
