Missy Newhouse of Mexia was diagnosed with Stage 3 invasive lobular carcinoma, a form of breast cancer, after a biopsy in late April, according to her account. She said the mass was close to the skin's surface, which made it easier to feel. "I knew something wasn't right with my body, and I'm thankful I continued looking for answers," Newhouse said. She encouraged others to know their bodies and speak up when something seems wrong.

Newhouse said she began chemotherapy and lost her hair after her first round. She said she chose to describe her treatment in terms of strength rather than fear. After chemotherapy, she had a double mastectomy. She said she was five weeks past surgery and still regaining full range of motion in her arms. Her oncology team has planned five years of treatment after radiation, including estrogen-blocking therapy and an oral chemotherapy medication, she said.

Newhouse credited her faith and a network of people who prayed for her, along with rest and daily positive affirmations. She named her family, longtime friends, church members, the Limestone Cancer Support Group and customers of Serenity Spa & Boutique as part of her support system. Her daughter, Madison, and her husband, Butch, were among those she thanked for their help.
