San Antonio Independent School District trustees unanimously approved construction bids for S.J. Davis Middle School and Martin Luther King Jr. Academy for Arts Integration. The district said contractor teams will begin mobilizing at both campuses soon, and groundbreaking ceremonies will be announced later.

At Davis Middle School, at 4702 E. Houston St., the district plans a new gymnasium and outdoor learning space. MLK Academy will get a new school building with classrooms, an auditorium, fine arts facilities, a library, a dining hall and outdoor play areas. The district released updated renderings and said the designs may change.

The approval comes as early voting is underway for the November 3 election, when district voters will decide whether to authorize $600 million in new bonds. In September, trustees had voted 5-2 to postpone about $65.8 million in proposed Bond 2020 construction spending for the two projects. Questions have been raised about spending, delays and unfinished projects from the $1.3 billion bond approved six years ago.
