The Chambers County Republican Party approved a resolution on Thursday, Oct. 8, urging the Texas Attorney General to seek action against New York's nonresidential carry ban. Precinct 4 Chair Steve Villemez introduced the resolution.
Villemez said that 15 states south of New York allow travelers to drive through legally, but that New York's law would make a nonresident a felon while carrying there. The resolution asks the attorney general to bring a suit against New York in the U.S. Supreme Court. It also urges the president and vice president to direct the Department of Justice in protecting Second Amendment rights.
The resolution asks U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, Sen. Ted Cruz and U.S. Rep. Brian Babin to support a Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act. It says New York and about a dozen other states do not recognize Texas License to Carry holders. According to the resolution, New York does not honor carry licenses from other states and does not let nonresidents get a New York license.
Attendee James Copeland, who said he travels to New York often, said he cannot store ammunition apart from a firearm in a lockbox there without risking a felony charge.
