Credit Union of Texas is giving away 300 turkeys and 300 hams in Kilgore. It is the second year of the holiday food giveaway. People waiting in line said the event helps with rising prices, especially for those on fixed incomes.
Karmyn Russell, who is disabled and lives on a fixed income, drove from Arp to get a turkey for her holiday table. She said rising gas and grocery prices are difficult. Jackie Richardson drove from Gladewater to pick up a turkey for someone else.
Ryan Betts, vice president of community engagement for the credit union, said the giveaway started at the credit union's Kilgore grand opening last year, when 300 turkeys and 100 hams were provided. This year, 200 more hams were added to meet community needs. Betts said he hopes the giveaway will ease stress for families facing inflation and other pressures. The credit union hopes to continue the giveaway each year and offer more turkeys and hams next time.
