A fire burned the fellowship hall and classrooms at Trinity Reformed Church in Muldoon on Saturday, Oct. 31. The church was formerly Muldoon Baptist Church. Muldoon Fire Chief Stephen Kelly said the cause is undetermined and that there was no evidence of suspicious activity. Pastor Will Martin said the cause may be related to a faulty electrical plug.

Martin said congregation member Will Calvert, who was staying in the church parsonage, smelled smoke around 10:20 p.m. when he went into the church office to print a sermon. Calvert called 911 right away. Martin said the Muldoon Volunteer Fire Department arrived eight minutes after the call. Firefighters from Flatonia Fire and Rescue and La Grange Volunteer Fire Department also responded. Kelly said the crews spent several hours fighting the flames and kept the fire in the fellowship hall.

The sanctuary, the oldest part of the church, was not reached by flames but suffered smoke damage, Martin said. The congregation met under a pavilion for worship Sunday morning. Martin said the property is insured. Fayette Classical Christian School canceled classes this week so classroom space can be arranged. Martin said no one was hurt.
