Tarrant County College broke ground in October on an $85 million, three-story science building at its Northeast Campus in Hurst. The building covers 84,438 square feet and will include specialized labs, study spaces and meeting areas. It is scheduled to open in fall 2028, when the campus turns 60.
The science building is part of a $225 million Northeast Campus project that also includes renovations of three existing buildings. The project will add more than 224,000 square feet of new and modernized educational space. It is included in the college's $955 million construction program.
Voters approved $825 million in bonds in 2019, according to a budget presentation in August. The college used existing funding sources to cover the rest of escalated costs, the presentation said. Biology professor Kristin Byrd, who helped plan the building, said, "This has been a long time coming." Board President Jeannie Deakyne said trustees take voters' trust "very seriously."
