Visitors toured the state Capitol in Austin on Wednesday. Gina Hinojosa, the governor-elect, will take office in January. The story says she began her political career by running for a school board seat to save Pease Elementary, where her child attended school.
Dawn Becker, an international teacher, said that background matters to her. Becker said she left Texas for Germany about 20 years ago to teach because public schools were hard on teachers here. She said the election could make a return to teaching in Texas easier in the coming years. "That's super important to me that somebody thinks public education is important enough to serve on the school board," Becker said.
Linda Leon, a social worker, said Hinojosa's election is meaningful for representation. Leon said she works as an advocate for marginalized communities and believes Hinojosa will be able to help those communities going forward. The story describes Hinojosa as the state's next female governor and its first Latina governor.
