Democrat Bobby Pulido defeated Republican incumbent Monica De La Cruz in Congressional District 15, according to the report. The district runs from San Antonio's Southeast Side through parts of Corpus Christi and the Rio Grande Valley to the U.S.-Mexico border. The race was part of a wave of Democratic victories across Texas.
Democrats recruited Pulido, a Latin Grammy-winning Tejano singer, to run in the newly redrawn district. During the campaign he kept performing, including at quinceañeras, while traveling across South Texas to meet voters.
After his win, Pulido said the country needs immigration reform now and that it is tied to the region's economy. He said immigration should be taken out of politics and addressed with policy, and that it will require a bipartisan solution. He said he is willing to work across party lines.
