Democrat Gina Hinojosa was elected governor of Texas on Tuesday, defeating Republican incumbent Greg Abbott, the Associated Press reported. AP said she is the first Democrat to hold the office in more than 30 years and would be the state's first Latina governor.

News 4 San Antonio reported that Abbott has conceded the race while votes are still being counted. That report said that if Hinojosa's victory is certified, she will be the first Democratic governor since 1994.

Hinojosa is a state legislator who has represented an Austin district since 2017. AP reported that Abbott's campaign had spent $180 million since last year. Hinojosa will take office after the results are certified.
