Sam Houston State University is accelerating its search for a new Director of Athletics. The committee includes a member of the Texas State University System Board of Regents, a student-athlete representative, faculty and university staff, and men's basketball head coach Chris Mudge, among others. White said the committee members' perspectives will help with an important decision, and that the work will be supported by CSA's national search expertise.
The search follows a September announcement that longtime Director of Athletics Bobby Williams will retire at the end of the 2026–27 athletic season. Williams has served the university for 45 years and has led the Athletics department since 1997. He will continue in the role through the spring, and the university plans events to celebrate his contributions.
The athletic program has moved to NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision competition and Conference USA. The university said the next director will lead the program as it works to advance competitive excellence and strengthen institutional partnerships.
