JCPenney plans to put 97% of its in-store items on sale from Nov. 5 to 11, according to a company statement. The Plano, Texas-based chain also says it will offer weekly "Really Big Deals" through Dec. 13. The company says its steepest savings will be on seasonal items in its top categories, based on peak consumer demand.

Other planned events include "Holiday Daily Deals" from Nov. 16 to 19 and Black Friday discounts. A separate sale runs from Dec. 1 to Dec. 25 and includes a "price lock" on items for the season.

The story reports that retailers across the country are increasing discounts as they try to attract shoppers, some of whom are concerned about their jobs or the economy. Costco and Target are also offering discounts ahead of Black Friday weekend. JCPenney is also partnering with Harry Potter for an in-store area with planned events, and select stores will have a Hogwarts Express train.
