A pickup struck a family's vehicle from behind on State Highway 30 near Roans Prairie in Grimes County at about 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, the Texas Department of Public Safety said. Sgt. Justin Ruiz said the family was eastbound in a 2026 Nissan Kicks when the 2014 Ford F-150 behind them hit it. Ruiz said the Ford's driver failed to control the vehicle's speed. He said the Ford's driver did not report any injuries.

The Nissan's driver, 23-year-old Thomas Mahon, died Sunday night from his injuries, according to family members. Mahon, who was from the Longview area, and his 2-year-old son were airlifted to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston. The family said Mahon donated his organs. The son remains hospitalized after surgery for internal injuries and fractures, family members said, and was still in the hospital as of Oct. 28.

The mother was taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Bryan and has been treated and released, family members said. Family members said the couple's 3-year-old daughter was moved to Memorial Hermann and needed 17 stitches to repair her tongue before she was released the next day. Grandmother Lori Alberson said the family was returning from a trunk-or-treat event at Accel at College Station.
