Gina Hinojosa was elected Texas governor and Vikki Goodwin was elected lieutenant governor in Tuesday's election, according to the report. Both would be the first women to hold those jobs in their roles, as Hinojosa would be the state's first Latina governor and Goodwin the first female lieutenant governor.
On Friday, state Rep. Senfronia Thompson announced she had the votes to become House speaker when the Legislature convenes in January. The session would be the first under a Democratic majority since 2003. If Thompson's coalition holds, Texas would have its first all-female "Big Three" of governor, lieutenant governor and House speaker. Two women, Miriam "Ma" Ferguson and Ann Richards, have served as governor, and no woman has held the other two jobs.
State Rep. Christina Morales, a Houston Democrat, said it was past time for women to lead in Texas. "Look at these women's records," Morales said. "You can see that they are qualified and now they're going to be in charge of Texas."
