Houston mayor limits police cooperation with ICE during traffic stops
Mayor John Whitmire directed police to limit cooperation with immigration officers during traffic stops, months after Gov. Greg Abbott threatened state funding over the city's past policies.
Houston Mayor John Whitmire has directed police to limit cooperation with immigration officers during traffic stops. The order comes months after Gov. Greg Abbott threatened to withhold millions of dollars in state funding over the city's past restrictions on cooperating with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Whitmire announced the change at a news conference on Friday. "I do this to begin a healing process — reduce fear and anxiety across our community," he said. He added, "I also do this knowing that elections matter."
