Texas State Technical College (TSTC) is adding evening classes to its plumbing and pipefitting program in Abilene. The college cites continued demand for skilled plumbers across the Big Country. Steve Longmire, TSTC's plumbing and pipefitting instructor, said the classes will meet four days a week from 6 to 9:40 p.m. He said the schedule will let people start learning a trade while they keep their current jobs. Diane Walters, director of industry relations at Lochridge Priest, a local employer, spoke to students. She said her company looks for employees who show up on time, listen, ask good questions and help others. Asked how TSTC will measure whether the evening classes meet local workforce needs, Longmire said the program is designed to prepare journeymen plumbers. He said students already working for plumbers in the Big Country have been happy with the training so far. Registration for the spring semester is open. Classes are scheduled to begin January 11.
