McAllen city leaders met Monday at town hall to discuss next steps for a proposed new city hall. The project has finished its preliminary design phases and is preparing for construction development, but leaders have not yet chosen between two options for the final facade.

A current schematic design, based on a feasibility study, projects city hall staff could grow from 198 employees to 354 by 2046, an increase of nearly 79%. The design includes 51,514 square feet of office space within a 110,700-square-foot building. The IT department would see the largest increase, from 32 staff to 60 over two decades. The finance department is projected to add 16 employees and city management eight. City leaders have met with the police department to plan security for the building.

The commission asked for changes to the earlier design, saying it was not satisfied with the initial vision. Updated renderings based on that feedback were shown in January.
