The Mission school board voted on Oct. 21 to direct Superintendent Cris King to conduct a comprehensive review of the district's programs, services, staffing and expenditures. The resolution also asks him to develop options for aligning those areas with current and projected enrollment and educational needs.

The resolution lists enrollment of 14,503 students in the 2022-2023 school year and 12,868 this year, a decrease of about 1,635 students, or about 11%. District projections show enrollment could fall to 11,796 by the 2031-2032 school year, an 8% decrease. Full-time employees numbered about 2,264 in 2022-2023 and 2,118 this year.

The budget adopted for 2026-2027 projects about $187.8 million in revenue and just over $200 million in expenses, with payroll about 80% of spending. The resolution also lists the unassigned fund balance at $81.3 million in 2023 and $60.3 million as of June 30, 2025.

Board President Natividad "Nati" Sosa said she supported the resolution because it formalizes the plan and provides a framework. "We are accepting that this is what we're going to be working on and we're recognizing that we have an issue," Sosa said.
