Chambers County commissioners received an update last week on the Justice Center and Jail in Anahuac. The 13-acre facility cost $176 million and was built over more than two years, with ground broken on July 25, 2024, according to the report.
Project manager Logan Hawthorne said the county is nearing full move-in and occupancy. The Sheriff's Office began moving Oct. 5, and the courthouse began moving Oct. 19. The District Clerk's Office has announced it is operating fully from the new building. Work is underway to move the two state district courts and the district attorney's offices, followed by the county judge, county court-at-law and county attorney's offices to the third floor.
Hawthorne said construction on the jail is not expected to be finished until early 2027. Construction fencing will remain in the parking lot to separate work areas from occupied areas. Hawthorne asked the public for patience during the move.
