At its Oct. 28 regular meeting, the Dallas City Council approved $20 million for the first phase of construction on a new Dallas Police Department Law Enforcement Training Center at the University of North Texas Dallas campus. The city said the project has an estimated budget of $227 million. The first phase includes $17.5 million in private donations and $2.5 million from the city's 2024 bond program, according to a council resolution. Swinerton Builders will oversee construction. The center will be at 1200 E. Camp Wisdom Road.

The council also authorized $15 million in state grants from the Texas Office of the Governor's Criminal Justice Division. The resolution says the grants will help address infrastructure and facility needs at the current Dallas Police Training Academy. The council accepted $17.5 million in private donations from QuikTrip Corp., which gave $10 million in exchange for naming rights to the facility's Basic Training Building, and the W.W. Caruth, Jr. Foundation Fund, which gave $7.5 million through the Communities Foundation of Texas.

The council accepted a $1.25 million state grant to cover forensic analysis of physical evidence collected in sexual assault kits. The grant will fund the Sexual Assault Evidence Testing Program from Sept. 1, 2026, through Aug. 31, 2027, according to the resolution. The training center project would also receive $82 million if voters approve the city's bond proposal on Nov. 3.
