The Lubbock Symphony Orchestra said Friday that music director David Cho has accepted a three-year contract extension, keeping him with the orchestra through the 2029-30 season. The extension comes in Cho's 15th season leading the LSO. This year marks the orchestra's 80th anniversary, which it marked with a performance of Verdi's Messa da Requiem at Buddy Holly Hall.
Heather Hocker, the LSO's chief executive officer, said Cho has provided artistic leadership that has benefited the orchestra and the city. She said he works well with musicians, audiences and the educators and students in the orchestra's outreach programs. The orchestra said that under Cho it has expanded its programming and its presence in Lubbock and regional schools. It also said he has worked on collaborations with Ballet Lubbock and The Lubbock Chorale.
Cho said he is grateful for the trust the organization and the region have placed in him. The orchestra's next concert is Home for the Holidays on Tuesday, Dec. 1, conducted by artistic director Eric Allen. Cho returns to the podium for Masterworks 3, Brahms: Double Concerto, on Friday, Jan. 22, with doors opening at 6 p.m. Season schedules and single-ticket information are available at lubbocksymphony.org or by calling 806-762-1688.
