The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is urging Texans to take extra precautions this Halloween. Its tips include choosing safe costumes, staying visible while trick-or-treating, staying alert behind the wheel and watching for pedestrians.
Texas Highway Patrol Chief Bryan Rippee said Halloween should be a night of fun and celebration. He asked drivers to stay focused, slow down and watch closely for children and pedestrians. He also said people who drink should plan a sober ride home.
According to the non-profit Safe Kids Worldwide, children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a vehicle and killed on Halloween than on any other night of the year.
