A funeral service for Van Zandt County Sheriff's Deputy Adam Sherifi was held Tuesday at Gravity Athletics in Canton. Hundreds of first responders, family members and friends attended. Sherifi was killed in a shootout last week while serving a warrant, according to the report.

Abel Barrientos, a longtime friend, led the ceremony. Drew Stokes, a Texas Game Warden in Van Zandt County and another longtime friend, said the turnout showed that the law enforcement family stands together. Smith County Chief Deputy Gary Pinkerton and his team also attended. Pinkerton said officers face uncertainty each day when they go to work. The group Brotherhood for the Fallen sent members from New York City and Chicago, according to a member who spoke at the service.

Sherifi, 31, graduated from Quinlan Ford High School in 2014. He served as a volunteer firefighter with the Quinlan Volunteer Fire Department, then with the police departments of Hawk Cove, West Tawakoni and Caddo Mills before joining the Van Zandt County Sheriff's Office. His friend Justin Rokoski, who met him in high school, said Sherifi became a father and found the love of his life.
