A search warrant affidavit describes the investigation into the death of Mayra Landeros, who was stabbed on Oct. 28, according to KGNS in Laredo. The eight-page document accuses her husband, 29-year-old Abel Garza, of murder. U.S. Customs and Border Protection confirmed to KGNS that Garza was an off-duty Border Patrol agent at the time.
According to the affidavit, neighbors on the 5500 block of Texana Street called police after a man covered in blood knocked on doors and asked for help. Police used a drone to search the area and spotted two men running. One got into an SUV and drove away, and police followed it by drone to an intersection. Officers said Garza told them he needed help and that his wife was injured. They found Landeros bleeding in the back of the SUV. Police detained Garza, and Landeros was taken to a hospital, where she later died.
The affidavit says Garza told investigators he saw messages on his wife's phone and asked her to separate. Garza claimed Landeros then began stabbing herself with a kitchen knife. He also said he went to neighbors for help and did not call 911 because he did not know where his phone was.
Police said a family member called and claimed Garza had confessed to killing his wife. The affidavit says police called Garza's father about the alleged confession, and he reportedly confirmed it. Investigators are also looking into the couple's previous domestic dispute history.
