A cold front hit the Brownwood community garden about the middle of October, according to its monthly report. Temperatures in the low to mid 40s were not freezing, but the report said they were cold enough to stop production for a time.
The garden said aphids and disease affected its Indian Snake cucumbers after the cold arrived. Most cucumber beds had been pulled by the end of the month. The remaining plants were expected to be harvested around November 2.
Squash recovered from the cold and was producing baby squash again by the end of the month. Okra output slowed to a crawl. Peppers, including bells, jalapeños, poblanos and cubanelles, were harvested in large amounts in early fall. They paused when the cold arrived and were producing again about two weeks later, the report said.
