The Maverick County Hospital District received a total of $1,773,293 through two grant initiatives under the federal Rural Health Transformation Program, according to the report. The Texas Health and Human Services Commission administers the funds through the state's Rural Texas Strong initiative.
The awards are part of about $87 million in rural healthcare grants that Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced on October 29, 2026. Of the district's total, $725,000 came through the Next Generation of the Small Town Doctor and Team initiative, which helps rural providers recruit, train and retain physicians and other medical staff. The district also received $1,048,293 through the Infrastructure and Capital Investments for Rural Texas initiative, which supports healthcare facilities, medical equipment and infrastructure.
District Chief Executive Officer Nestor Bonilla welcomed the funding as a chance to strengthen healthcare services and meet growing medical needs in Maverick County.
