Detectives with the Plano Police Department's Financial Crimes Unit helped return $20,000 in stolen cryptocurrency to a Plano resident. Police said the detectives traced the stolen digital assets through a network of transactions that crossed international borders.

The department did not say who took the funds or whether any criminal charges have been filed. Det. A. Jones said cryptocurrency crimes are designed to move money quickly and be hard to follow. Jones said the case shows that persistence, technical skill and investigative work can return victims' money to them.

Police said recovering digital funds is rare. They also said this is the first cryptocurrency seizure by a municipal law enforcement agency in Collin County without help from a federal agency. Anyone who believes they are the victim of a cryptocurrency fraud or scam should report it to the FBI at www.IC3.gov. Police also urged residents to be careful about financial advice from people they have just met online.
