JayRobert Rangel, 18, was sentenced Wednesday to 50 years in prison for the 2024 murder of Ramiro Alvarado Jr., the Bexar County Criminal District Attorney's Office said. A jury convicted Rangel of murder and six counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon two months ago.

San Antonio police said Alvarado was shot around 6 p.m. Dec. 30 at his girlfriend's home on Adaes Avenue. Police said several teenage suspects approached the home and opened fire, and four to six of them fired shots into the back of the house. The suspects, believed to be 15 to 18 years old, ran off. Alvarado was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

Alvarado's family said he tried to protect others inside the home. None of the family members interviewed after the shooting saw it happen. Friends and family held a fundraiser to help pay for his funeral.
