Democratic state Rep. James Talarico defeated Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton in the Texas U.S. Senate race on Tuesday. The Associated Press called the race for Talarico shortly after 10 p.m., when he led Paxton.
Talarico, 37, is a four-term state legislator from Austin and a former middle school teacher. The win is the first for Texas Democrats in a U.S. Senate race since 1988, according to the report.
President Donald Trump endorsed Paxton, despite warnings from other Republican leaders that Paxton would put the seat at risk. Republicans spent over $280 million on advertising in the race, including over $200 million from Elon Musk, the report said. It described the contest as the most expensive U.S. Senate race on record.
