Police say a man is in critical condition after he may have mistakenly tried to enter the wrong apartment while wearing a Halloween costume. The shooting happened around 2:20 a.m. Thursday at an apartment complex on Bering Drive in the Galleria area. Houston Police believe the wounded man lives at the complex and was returning from a Halloween party. They say he may have been intoxicated and confused another unit with his own.
The resident, who asked not to be identified, told FOX 26 that he woke up to someone rattling his doorknob and kicking the door frame while insisting the home was his. He said he grabbed his firearm, looked through the peephole and saw a man outside. He said the man tried to force his way in, hit him, and tried to take him down, and that he then fired one shot, striking the man in the upper torso. He said he and his girlfriend did not recognize the man.
Paramedics took the wounded man to a local hospital in critical condition. Police say the resident stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators. No charges have been filed at this time.
