Researchers with the Texas Tech School of Veterinary Medicine in Amarillo are developing new ways to fight New World Screwworm, a parasite. The story reports 25 active cases of the parasite in the U.S.
Chad Cross joined the research team in 2025. His projects include using genetic technology to trap the screwworm fly and methods for rapid detection and identification. Cross said the work applies modern tools to a long-standing problem.
Jennifer Koziol, a doctor of veterinary medicine, said the parasite is very painful for animals and can burrow deep into them. For nearly two years, she has focused on teaching students and the public about its effects. The 25 active cases are across Texas, New Mexico and one in Arizona.
