Boerne Champion secured second place in the District 13-5A DI playoffs after beating the Austin McCallum Knights 61-0 on Friday at Boerne ISD Stadium. The Chargers improved to 8-1 overall and 6-1 in district. The top two teams in each 5A district host a first-round playoff game, so Champion will host a game in the postseason. The Chargers finish the regular season at Manor on Friday. The date and time of the home playoff game will be announced.
Champion coach Blane Ellis said hosting a first-round game was one of the team's goals this year. He said the team had been focused on it all week. Ellis said that if the team had lost, it would not have made the playoffs, so the win was important.
The Chargers defense recorded its third shutout of the season. Inaki Colsa returned an interception for a touchdown in the second half. Ellis said the defense is having a great season and is getting less attention than the offense. The Chargers offense scored seven touchdowns by halftime and led 48-0 at the break. Caleb Farias tied his season best with five rushing touchdowns.
