Democratic State Sen. Nathan Johnson spoke to history students at Wiley University during a campaign stop about his bid for Texas attorney general. The forum was held alongside voter registration activities by the Harrison County Democratic Party.

Johnson said he had talked with people who worked for Republican and Democratic attorneys general, and that they described the office as "scandalous." He said his first task would be rebuilding the office's talent, spirit and morale. He called the office "powerful and important."

Johnson faces Republican State Sen. Mayes Middleton on the Nov. 3 ballot. Johnson said the office is meant to uphold the rule of law. He said he would restore it, protect consumers, keep markets competitive and root out corruption. Johnson, a lawyer and mediator, said he has passed 134 bills since becoming a senator in 2019.
