U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers in Pharr seized 1,082.47 pounds of methamphetamine in 909 packages, according to a CBP press release. The seizure happened Oct. 30 at about 8 p.m. at the Pharr International Bridge.

A tractor-trailer headed to McAllen was sent to secondary inspection that day. A K-9 unit alerted officers to cylindrical packages hidden in a shipment of leeks, the release said. CBP put the street value of the drugs at $984,063.

CBP did not say whether anyone was arrested or charged in connection with the seizure. Jennifer De La O, director of Laredo Field Operations, said in the release that the seizure was part of Operation Southern Surge, a coordinated effort to disrupt drug trafficking along the southwest border.
