The Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office identified two of the four people who died in three Deep Ellum shootings on November 1, according to FOX 4, which obtained the records Monday. The victims were Kaniesa Scott, 21, and Unique Elise Benjamin, 28. Police said 15 others were injured. The shootings happened around 12:20, 1:05 and 1:35 a.m.
Police Chief Daniel Comeaux said officers had added assignments in Deep Ellum for the Halloween crowds. "We were fully staffed out here," he said at a news conference. Mayor Eric Johnson called the shootings unacceptable. The Deep Ellum Foundation announced community listening sessions and help for grieving families.
Council Member Cara Mendelsohn called for a review of police staffing and preparations. She said, "We need to understand how three separate shootings occurred within approximately 75 minutes in such a concentrated area." According to an October 13 city hiring memo, Dallas had 3,447 sworn officers, 553 short of the 4,000 required by Proposition U, a 2024 charter amendment. The city's budget projects 3,651 officers by September 2027 and 3,800 by September 2028.
