The Shiner-St. Paul Lady Cardinals varsity cross country team won the TAPPS 2A state championship on Monday, Oct. 26, in Waco. It was the program's third straight state title. The team had seven varsity runners, four of them seniors.
Skylar Mozisek was the team's fastest runner at state. She finished fourth in the two-mile race in 14:05.4. St. Paul coach Nicco Brown said Mozisek is "just a natural runner" and is very competitive. Senior Faith Brown, the coach's daughter, finished eighth, and sophomore McKinley Jacobs finished tenth. All three were named All-State.
Coach Brown said the team started the season with only five runners and had to recruit to reach seven. Jacobs was one of the new runners. Brown said Jacobs earned a tenth-place finish at state in her first year on the team.
